12-year-old Victim of torture undergoes medical tests -CMD
The Chief Medical Director (CMD), Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki (FEITH), Dr Emeka Ogah has disclosed that the victim of maltreatment, Miss Faith Nwanja is currently undergoing series of medical examination.
Dr Ogah represented by Chairman Medical Adversory Committee (CMAC), Dr Robbinson Ono in the hospital told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that paediatricians had been directed to carry out various test on the victim.
“We are still investigating the case, however, we cannot give out report now until the paediatricians in charge are through with the tests by Monday” he said.
NAN recalls that Nwanja was allegedly dehumanized and inflicted with severe injuries by her aunt, Mrs Nkechinyere Bartholomew.
Faith Nwanja, a house help was alleged to have been dehumanized and inflicted severe injuries by her mistress, Mrs Nkechinyere Bartholomew.
The victim, native of Okoffia-Ohaji in Ezza-South Local Government Area of the state said she had been subjected to serious torture by her mistress.
She disclosed this in her Local dialect during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abakaliki, The Victim while narrating her ordeal also added that she had suffered great pains as her mistress often used different objects such as iron rod, wire among other objects to torture her.
“These scars, injuries on my head, body and lips were as a result of beating by my aunt gave for four years.
“My aunt sometimes used blade to cut my skin, force and insert wooden objectss inside my private part and hit me with iron, wire and also tie me with the chain whenever she was going out,” Faith said.
Mrs Ngozi Nwanja, Mother of the Victim, said her daughter was 8 years old when she gave her out to the Bartholomews. She said all her efforts made to See her daughter was not successful as the perpetrator’s mother always claimed her contact number was not reachable.
“When Bartholomew’s came for my child through her mother who resides in Idembia Ezza-South LGA she, promised that her daughter would take care of my child”.
The Vice Chairman of the Council, Mrs Caro Ewa said the Victim was brought to her on Feb 12 by Head of Department, Education and Social Welfare at the council area.
She however noted that the Council Chairman, Mr Sunday Ogodo had ordered for arreast of the perpetrator’s mother and brother as they were conniving to hide Mrs Bartholomew.
.Meanwhile, the Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO) ASP Loveth Odah while speaking on the incident said that the suspect’s Sister who came back with the victim to Ebonyi had been apprehended and detained.
Odah noted that the suspect whose name was given as Chinelo Ngwuta would lead the Police to get the principal suspect Mrs Bartholomew arrested.
She explained that the matter would be treated as a case in transit as the state Command does not have jurisdiction over the matter because of the grievous harm caused on the Child was done at Anambra state.
“Ngwuta will lead the Police to the principal suspect and we will make she’s arreasted, ” Odah said.
She caution mothers not to give out their minors to strangers because they would not be able to protect themselves in case of any maltreatment.
The Wife of the State Governor, Mrs Rachael Umahi condemned the act and directed that all relevant agencies should ensure the culprit is handled in accordance with the law while the Victim would be treated and rehabilitated.
Mrs Umahi gave the directive through her Chief Press Secretary, Mr Donatus Owo.
“This act is highly condemnable, we have asked the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Police, organisations and agencies to follow up the matter to bring the culprit to book,” she said..
