SGF IN FRESH SCANDAL Over APPOINTMENT OF DUNUMA MD FAAN,
BY TITUS AGBO,
The embattled Secretary to the Government of the Federation, (SGF) Engineer Babachir David Lawal may be in for another trouble over the curious appointment of a Managing Director for the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN)
The SGF who was sent on compulsory leave just before the Esther holidays by the President over his complicity in the awards of questionable contracts by the Presidential Initiative on the North East (PINE) hurriedly announced that Alhaji Sale Dunoma ‘s appointment has been ratified.
The announcement created confusion within the aviation industry as Alhaji Sale Dunoma was duly appointed Managing Director of the agency by the immediate past administration of Goodluck Jonathan in September 2014 and he is still occupying the position despite attaining the compulsory retirement year of 35 in service, September 2015.
Dunoma joined the services of the authority on the 5th of September 1980 and has had a flourishing career which saw him progressively holding various positions from General Manager to the topmost position of the chief executive of FAAN.
He attained mandatory retirement years of service, 35 in September 2015 but was allowed to stay on like several other appointees of the previous regime who are allegedly rendering returns to certain aides of the President.
Ironically, two of the directors who were appointed the same time with Dunoma were edged out upon their attainment of the retirement age of 60 last year but the Managing Director was retained without any fresh appoint perhaps on contract.
The two disengaged directors were Captain Henry Umeogu, the former Director of Airport Operations and the former Director of Administration, Mr Uko Ikechi Kalu. Kalu’s disengagement was more pathetic because he was made to pay back the salaries he collected for the extra months he stayed after he clocked 60 years.
Within the rank and file staff of the authority the question begging for answers is the explanation on the claim that Alhaji Dunoma’s appointment as the Managing Director of FAAN has been ratified.
A top official of the agency who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity queried, “What do they mean by the claim that his appointment has been ratified? By which body? This is the first time since my over 30 years in this industry that am hearing that the appointment of MD for FAAN is being ratified”.
It was reliably gathered that some group of workers were already gearing to forward a petition to the Vice President Osibanjo led committee against the SGF over the appointment.
The group felt that the incumbent Managing Director should be made to pay back to government the salaries and allowances he has been collecting since September 2015 he ought to have left the service rather than compensating him with “ratification of appointment”.
“There should be no sacred cow since a precedence has already been laid in Uko Ikechi Kalu the erstwhile Director of Administration, Dunoma should be made to refund the monies he had collected after he was due for retirement two years ago”. The group noted stressing that ” this has clearly shown that the SGF has been manipulating the appointments into the various agencies under this regime and he should be made face the music this time around”.
