Arewa Integrity group urges prosecution of ex-Gov. Shinkafi after EFCC detention

A group known as the Arewa Integrity Forum has urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and the Independent Corrupt Practices & Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, to as a matter of urgency commence the immediate prosecution of former Zanfara State Governor, Alhaji Mahmud Aliyu Shikanfi who has just just been released from detention.

The group also accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC, of shielding the former governor, from prosecution after his initial arrest and in deliberate defiance of revelations of mismanagements and embezzlement of funds, including his alleged role in the stealing of arms fund, by the immediate past administration.

The group wondered why Shinkafi who was quietly arrested early this month was again freed after about two weeks in detention without any neing charged to court.

The forum led by Usman Umar made the call in a Statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday.

It would be recalled that Shinkafi was first arrested by EFCC last year in connection with N450m campaign fund disbursed to leaders of the PDP in Zamfara State but he was released by the anti-corruption body after evidence was obtained from him.

Shinkafi later defected to the governing All Progressives Congress, APC, from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, apparently to avoid prosecution and subsequent arrests.

However, his re-arrest early this month indicates that some forces in the EFCC still feels that the former governor has questions to answer concerning the illegally obtained public fund.

The group also claimed that Shinkafi allegedly looted the treasury during his reign as governor of Zamfara State.

The Statement issued by the Arewa Integrity Forum further accused Shinkafi of allegedly looting several billions of naira from the state, leaving a lot of abandoned projects as legacies.

Usman claimed that the looting was the main reason the state was reeling under the weight of poverty.

Usman called on the Anti-graft agencies to as a matter of immediate concern arrest Shinkafi and probe him.

The forum also called on the federal government to impress it upon the anti corruption agencies to arrest Shinkafi, not minding his mischievous decision to dump his former party, the PDP, for the ruling All Progressives Congress.

The group said it has resolved, to approach the Federal High Court in Abuja, to compel the ICPC and EFCC to probe former Governor Shinkafi, if its call is not answered by these agencies.
