Ex-President Jonathan Deserves Appreciation Not Persecution, says Ogbia Professionals
The attention of the Young Ogbia Professionals has been drawn to a release purportedly made by a faceless group, writing under the name Save Ogbia Movement, which in reality does not in any shape or form represent the enlightened and courageous people of Ogbia. We, in the time honoured tradition of true Ogbia sons and daughters, would ordinarily not descend so low as to join issues with a collection of paid hirelings, but there is a need to set the records straight for those who are genuinely interested in national preservation.
It is rather unbecoming of people claiming to be true descendants of Ogbia land that they would reduce a man who served his country, as Deputy Governor, Governor, Vice President, Acting President and ultimately President and Commander-In-Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, to a cross bearer for an agenda that has been flatly rejected by the people of Bayelsa state is a disservice to our people. We call on these characters and their paymasters to borrow a leaf from other parts of Nigeria that have had the rare privilege of producing leaders of Nigeria, and ask themselves if the likes of Gen. Babangida and Abdulsalami Abubakar have been asked to actively involve themselves in the bickering over local politics in their domains.
Any attempt to reduce such a man to participating in local political horse-trading is to subject the great people of the Niger delta to ridicule. We are of the strong opinion that it would be unfair on the up and coming politicians in Ogbia if Dr. Jonathan were to superimpose the privileges and influence he has acquired through his time in the public service in Nigeria on the affairs of PDP in Bayelsa state.Dr. Jonathan has become a father figure to all Ogbia sons and daughters, and indeed people from all over Nigeria, regardless of party affiliations as he had declared that he would expend his time out of office building the next generation and institutions for national sustainability. He has never shown disregard for the PDP, without prejudice to the fact that many senior party figures betrayed him, including those from his home state, but has continued to dedicate himself to steadying the ship of the party and to ensure that it continues to make progress like the true democrat that he is.
We urge this group and their paymasters to refrain from smearing the person of this great pride of the Niger Delta with the paint of dishonor that they have become known for and engage in serious soul searching to align themselves with the wishes of the people again. Our people are suffering from neglect and brazen persecution by the Federal Government of today, and this is the time for all well-meaning Niger Deltans to rally around the person of Dr. Jonathan to demand for more attention to be given to the real issues of underdevelopment in our region rather than seeking legitimacy for their through Jonathan’s endorsement.
