INEC bars PDP, APC from Anambra Central Senatorial election
Neither the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) are eligible to field candidates to contest the vacant Anambra Central Senatorial election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), yesterday.
Chairman of INEC, Prof Mahmood Yakubu who stated this Monday emphasised that any party whose candidate was disqualified by a court could not present another candidate for a rerun election.
In a chat with newsmen Yakubu stated that the electoral body would be guided by the same principle used in the conduct of Kogi rerun election for Anambra Central.
The Supreme Court recently declined hearing on the suit filed by Senator Uche Ekwunife challenging the nullification of her election by the Appeal Court, Enugu division.
The current Minister of Labour and Productivity, Dr Chris Ngige who vied under the platform of APC has not indicated interest in recontesting, hence leaving APC with no candidate for the rerun election.
With this development the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate, Chief Victor Umeh remains the most formidable candidate and looks set to coast to victory.
