Jonathan receives PDP former speakers, promises reforms in the party

By Titus Agbo

Former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan yesterday promised that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would reform its delegate election processes as a means of reducing the rancor and controversy that result from such exercise.

The former President made the promise Thursday while hosting members of former PDP Speakers Forum who paid him a courtesy call in his office in Abuja.

The former President said: “The way we elect our candidates, national and state officers is still a challenge for our party. We must reform our party in a way that no one person can influence the outcome of our delegate elections. If we are able to resolve that we would have solved a major problem in our party.

He also made a case for increasing the number od statutory delegates as a means of reducing the controversy during delegate conferences, adding that those who had held very senior positions like former governors should be adopted as statutory delegates.

He said further: “I believe the next constitution amendment should advocate for that area to be properly examined.

“From my own experience, if that area is strengthened, the party will be okay and nobody will complain at the end of primaries. “If you lose, you lose gallantly and you support the person that wins.”

While welcoming the former Speakers, Jonathan noted that law makers play a crucial role in a democracy and in building a party. “You are in deed strong members of our party…Democracy is still evolving in Nigeria and I believe that as we make progress, a body like yours is needed to contribute your quota to national development”.

Jonathan noted that the PDP is still the strongest party in the country, adding that the party recorded great achievements, reforms and innovations in the 16 years that it was in power. “For that we should all be proud as members of PDP. The party gave a good account of itself in all those years.”
