Rotary, the ideal way to serve humanity—Rotarian Onukwugha

The new District Governor of Rotary District 9125, Rotarian Victor Onukwugha is a true humanitarian who has too many lives in many ways ranging from award of scholarships to empowerments to social welfare to even people he will never get to meet in life. He is an outstanding architect and an Abuja based real estate developer and manager. His company, BAUHAUS International Limited has sprawling estates in the hearts of Abuja and in outskirts. His desires to serve humanity made him to join rotary about three decades ago. He had joined District 9110, Lagos in 1989 before transferring his membership to District 9125, Abuja in the year 2000 upon relocation to Abuja. While in Abuja he rose through the ranks in service and trainings to the exalted position of the District Governor of District 9125, Abuja. In this chance interview, Rotarian Onukwugha speaks of his love and commitment to the works of charity which rotary has presented him the rare opportunity to actualize. Excerpt: Ques: as the District Governor of Rotary District 9125 how do you feel? Ans:I feel great and am happy that Rotarians in this district have found me worthy to lead them as the District Governor for the next one year. It is challenging but I know that with God on my side l will not disappoint them. Am also happy that I have strong team of executives and board to help me achieve results. Ques:What does rotary mean to you? Ans: Rotary to me is a way of life. I live rotary, I breathe rotary. To me it is the indirect way of giving to the society; it is the ideal way to serve humanity. It’s the proper way to touch lives of even those who don’t know you. It is only through rotary you give such service. Ques:What is your vision for rotary in the net one year? Ans:Rotary is an organized group. Every year new leaderships emerge beginning from the club which is the smallest unit to the international body. Globally it has 524 districts headed by District Governors, over 3,000 clubs manned by club presidents with over 1.2 million memberships in 200 countries across the globe. These are created for purposes of ease of administration. Now back to l question, what is my vision for the district in the next one year, I will say that it will be my desire to promote the ideals of rotary, grow the clubs and make huge contributions to rotary foundation, (RF). It will equally be my joy to see that our district performs extremely well in all the six areas of focus, organize the district so as to have a ? you give an idea of the level of impacts rotary made in the lives of people in your district to date? Ans: In District 9125 comprising Abuja, 19 northern states, four states in the west, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti and oyo, we have 2,465 members, and about 142 clubs. And in all these states and Abuja we have executed impactful projects through clubs and Rotarians. Rotary has done boreholes, promoted health care, especially in disease control and engaged in peace building processes like conflict resolutions. We have awarded scholarships to indigent students and empowered vulnerable youths and widows and these are done continually. Ques: There is this often misconstrued perception of rotary as a cult group; what is your reaction to this? Ans: It is true that some people try to ascribe us as a cult group but it is far from the truth. In my club as a president l inducted a Reverend Father and there several pastors and clergies who are members of rotary. I think the misunderstanding is that rotary first started as a friendship club but it is a club ruled by charity. Ques: How do you see the emergence of Women In Rotary in Your District? Ans: It is wrong to describe a mere desire expressed by some group of women as the emergence of women in rotary. As far as am concerned that idea cannot fly. It is abnormal. Rotary is founded on principles of gender equality so women in rotary negate the spirit of rotary. It is an issue that the female Rotarians in America fought up to the Supreme Court and won years back so it cannot fly. What l will to see is rotary in women that will make them occupy prominent offices at various levels and am happy that there are strongly coming up. Ques: What would you like to leave as your legacy at the end of your tenure? Ans: At the end of my regime I will be leave the district far better than l met it. I will be happy to bequeath a well-structured rotary dignified district strengthened with more clubs and memebers.
