Women Arise canvasses more roles for women in 2019

The Women Arise for Change Initiative, (WA) in Lagos said on Thursday that it would collaborate with political parties to ensure women were given more slots in 2019 general elections.

Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin, the President of WA said in Lagos that the desire of the group was to have more women participate in active politics.

According to her, “I have been busy working on women political participation since the last general elections.

“Women Arise, since the last general elections, has continued to work on women political participation to ensure that more women participate in politics.

“Our focus this 2018 is to bring more women to contest for political positions in 2019 elections.

“We have started engaging the leadership of various political parties most especially the prominent ones to open up space for women contestants.

“We are also carrying out advocacy for affirmative action by ensuring 30 per cent women are allowed and given automatic opportunity to contest for elective positions,’’

She advised women to be bold to run for higher positions adding that the era when women relegated themselves to the background was over.

Okei-Odumakin urged women who were already in position of authority to ensure they gave helping hands to the upcoming ones.
